41 Lighthouse Street

Galle, Sri Lanka

The client, a bachelor, required a “chill out” entertaining space for friends and guests with the option of renting the property out. Only part of the original Dutch house remained and the original façade was completely bricked up by various ad hoc additions done by previous owners.

It was our job to create more light and rationalize the spaces, while still retaining as many original features as possible e.g. the black and white floor tiles at the main entrance.

To link the original structure, we added a new wing to accommodate the additional bedrooms. The new internal spaces with the finest teak glazed screens maximize the bedroom areas and nods respectfully at classic Japanese architecture.

32, Middle Street

Galle Fort, Sri Lanka

Middle Street is located in the Galle Fort. The basic form of the original house was more or less intact, especially the main entrance façade. Its simple decorative distempered limestone walls and pivot timber glazed shutters were retained. This original façade enclosed the street side veranda and acted as a sound baffle from the outside world. The client wanted to create a house that was classic and clean-lined in composition. The internal layout and new colonnaded verandas are in balance, reminiscent of the British Colonial era. The house is simple yet sophisticated, well proportioned and finely detailed. A plunge pool and a yoga sun terrace enjoy a private location on the first floor.

Sky House

Habaraduwa, Sri Lanka

A Hong Kong based family who wanted to create a luxurious 5 Bedroom holiday beach house for their family and friends. A grand and elegant two-storey house set on a very modest site posed a challenge for the team to design. We included large open plan living areas and verandas to command the best views of the sea. Transparency was paramount, so spaces were manipulated to provide natural cooling in the form of large open internal reflective pools.

Eden House

Galle, Sri Lanka

This original 18th century Dutch house located in the galle fort had been virtually left to ruin. The only salvageable part of the house was the front main section. Towards the rear end of the site was evidence of a simple colonnade wing, which was beyond restoration. The site was carefully and painstakingly surveyed to understand the original foundation footings and the Dutch sewage links below. This dictated the final design layout. The client’s brief was to create a family home and to be sympathetic to the original house with a main internal courtyard. An eclectic Moroccan twist gave flavour and identity to the house and reflected the owner’s personal lifestyle.
