A modest budget framed this concept proposal. The design had to be simple and harmonious to the long ridge site. The client requested a more contemporary style of living with a token of Balinese/Sri-Lankan style vernacular. This took the form of a main communal living space with direct access to the pool and two separate pods for extra quiet sleeping quarters with carport and staff accommodation.

The concept proposal shown here is designed around the highest point of the 4-acre site, as it unfolds down towards the tea estate. It was important to maximise the 180-degree panoramic view and create a transparent open styled house to minimise obstructing walls for the visitor to enjoy the view of the landscape beyond. The natural internal water feature adds to the visual drama, connects the internal spaces and creates a natural cooling by cross ventilation. To reduce the mass of the original four bedroom designs, we developed the scheme further by taking advantage of the cascading drop of the site and located the two private bedroom pods on the lower plain below. These were linked with another water feature that runs down towards the main pool. The final scheme followed the contours of the land to deliver an organic living space with breathtaking views.
